The Great Windstorm of '07

I thought the great windstorm would be an appropriately exciting initial blog entry for the newly created (thanks Ryan) Kunz Knuz blog. So here goes . . .

It was a stormy monday morning in April. The Carolina mountain men were restless--they knew. The power had been threatening to cut out all morning, when suddenly, it was gone. The dryer stopped dead in it's tracks, the computer whined to a halt and all that was left was the sound of the wind in the trees. Then, the "thunking" began. "Thunk!!!" What was that?! A branch must have landed on the house. "Thunk!" and another. I put the baby to bed and Ethan wanted to head up the path to get an arial view of the house--to see if there were stray branches. We started up the path. I looked up at the swaying treetops and thought better of it. We went back inside to wait it out. A little before noon there was a sudden, earth-shaking "THUNK!!!". I thought for sure a tree had come down on the roof. I ran into the baby's room--no tree, but he was wide awake. I looked out the front door, then the back--no trees teetering on the house. It must have been a branch. A neighbor stopped by a few minutes later. "Are you guys okay?!" "Yes, why?" "Have you seen your car?" I looked out the boys' window and saw it. The tree hadn't landed on the house, nor the car, but a series of unfortunate events had unfolded. The tree fell down the hill, across the path Ethan and I had been on just a bit ago. It came down with such force it shook the ground, and took out power meter box which had been attached to my house. The power meter box was now sitting in the front seat of my van. The power line draped across the top. The force of the falling tree had torn the box from my house and sent it through the window of the minivan. Needless to say, it was quite an exciting day in the Hoisington household. We were without power for three days--two of which we had a power line draped across our driveway.

The most exciting part of it all however, was when they replaced the power meter directly outside of Ethan's window and he got to watch the guys in the little bucket crane go up and down mere inches from his face. All this on his birthday to boot.

It took nearly two weeks for them to replace the front door and window and buff out all the scratches and dents from the box and it's power lines. We have had quite the welcome into the Carolina mountain spring.

When I started the Kunz Knuz, the "blog" idea was put forth and I poo-pooed it because I wanted to do something more traditional. And, I'm skeptical of anything that uses cutesy internet language such as "blog" (consider this fair warning for any of you posting anything using cutesy web-speak shortcuts such as "lol" and "bff"--that I will make fun of you. What, are you 14? Learn to type already!). But, seeing as I have failed miserably at the regularity of the Kunz Knuz, why don't we give this a shot? I can't wait to read everybody's entries!
